FIREWORKS 02-03

Destructive fire, burning bodies, hopes and dreams.

Fire nurtured by our greed, insolidarity and confusion.

A new era but the same fire, not any more, the 20 Century has been enough, now is the time for a change because Freedom is the ground soil from which we have sprung, and now it is floating in the space forming new shapes which will transform our society.

TV series. Alienation.

                                   'Nothing to be done'

Most of the world's population lives closely together in metropolises but Marx's theories of alienation continue to be a relevant feature of society. This was illustrated as well by Guy Debord in his 'Society of the spectacle'

I'm trying to illustrate this new era through the same old medium of oil painting; being a critic but ambiguous enough, in order to leave some space for the viewers to make their own judgement or opinion, but also to enjoy painting.

I've decided to use television as a central motif in my compositions; that is because in a sense, TV's have supplanted the story-tellers from the past. People used to gather around the story-teller, usually around a warm fire which also illuminated them; now people gather around a glowing box.

Light is what I'm interested in; in that cold and artificial light which in this sense is a reflection of modern society, a virtual reality or hyper reality as Jean Baudrillard named it.

Apart from the above I work from daily observation, imagination and photographs, creating settings in a theatrical way, being metaphorical and presenting the world as a huge stage where all of us are actors or 'extras' as Baudrillard says.
